Overview
Grass Varieties
Turf grasses are generally divided into warm season (couches and
buffalos) and cool season (fescues and Kentucky bluegrass, ryes)
grasses.
All varieties of grasses are cut by a Turf Harvester and come
in standard rolls (2.5 meters long by 40cm wide), which equates
to 1 square metre.
Turf rolls may vary depending on the species and grower.
INSTANT lawn rolls come with approximately 25
- 50mm of soil and are usually delivered on a pallet (which holds
approximately 50 rolls of turf weighing approximately 800kg) and
are unloaded by a forklift or by hand, depending on the amount ordered.
Overview
Warm Season Grasses – grow actively over
the summer months and some can become dormant during the winter.
They are hardwearing, drought tolerant, self-repairing grasses.
They are characterised by their thick stolons (runners above the
ground) and rhizomes (roots below the ground), which must be kept
short to create a bowling green lawn. Certain varieties, especially
the couches (Conquest™) are available and can be laid all
year round.
Cool Season Grasses – are upright growing
(non-creeping), deep green in colour and will go a yellowy colour
during winter if they are not maintained ie fertilized. They can
produce a lush dress lawn, but require more water than warm season
grasses. They tolerate moderate traffic and are moderately drought
tolerant and can be laid all year round.
With permanent water restrictions in place, selecting an instant
lawn that uses less water when established is now more crucial than
ever.

Before ordering your Turf ask yourself these 3 questions
- Is your lawn area prepared, that is: Have you rotary hoed?
Have you spread quality topsoil? Have you leveled the area?
- Is your irrigation system working, that is: is it covering
the prepared lawn area?
- Have you measured your lawn? Do you know the square meterage
required?
If NO to any of the above, let McMahon’s Lawn Turf and Maintenance know –
