How to make sure your turf stays  as green as the day it was laid!

After your lawn has been laid:

Watering

Establishment period (1-4 weeks): New Lawns must be cared for and will need to be saturated initially after laying. Water the lawn twice a day – until it is moist – for at least the first 4 weeks. A test to see if you are over watering is to step lightly on the lawn and if you sink, leave a foot impression, after the first two week, then ease up the watering ie reduce the time that you water. Long term: Caring for your lawn, especially for the next 1 to 2 years after being laid, by watering at least every 2 days particularly during the summer will give your lawn an excellent chance of thriving and surviving.

Traffic

Do not walk on your new lawn for at least 10 days.  After that, use your new lawn sparingly for the next two to three weeks.  You want the roots structure to take hold, before you have constant use.  No heavy games, dog traffic or other rough games until this has occurred.  You can test this by gently stepping on the lawn, if you see movement, for example, sinking or leaving a foot impression, then the lawn is not ready for contact use.

Mowing

After your initial establishment period, you can look to mow your lawn for the first time. It is best to mow the lawn in different directions ie north/south, east/west so that you do not mow along the turf strips and cause the new roots to lift. Never remove more than a third of the leaf blade in a single mowing. Set the mower heights to the correct levels depending on your grass type and overall look you wish to have. Rule of thumb is: Couch 25-35mm; Tall Fescue 75-100mm.

Fertilising

During the establishment period – it is best to fertilize your lawn – approximately 2 weeks after it has been laid – with a “lawn starter” and water this in well. It is a good idea to fertilise your lawn at least 4 times a year – rule of thumb – at the change of each season. This will help maintain your lawn and retain its colour during the winter month

Maintenance

Prior to applying your spring time nitrogen-based fertiliser, mow your lawn slightly lower.  If the area is uneven, prior to mowing, top-dress with B-grade topsoil and mow in the opposite directions to iron out any bumps.   Do not apply to much topsoil, as you will smoother the lawn.  Brush to expose the leaf blades.

General

Remember to: water, fertilise 4 times a year, mow at the recommend heights, keep your mower blades sharp, do not let the grass grow too high and thatch, remove lawn clippings for  healthy, soft, green, environmentally friendly low maintenance lawn.
